Fresno Morning Republican, March 7, 1918

FRESNO, March 7.—-Herman Levy, for 44 years a leading business man In Fresno and neighboring parts of the San Joaquin valley, died at his home at 8 o’clock yesterday morning. He had been ill for more than two years with heart trouble, and had grown worse In the last few weeks until the end came yesterday in the presence of members of the family.

Herman Levy was born at Filehne, Posen, Germany, in 1856, and was about 62 years old. He came to America when 17 years old, and reached the San Joaquin valley in 1874. He engaged in business first at Fresno, then at Borden, about 18 miles northwest of Fresno, then the most Important town in this part of the valley. His general merchandise business there brought him acquaintance with most of the miners and herdsmen, as well as the farmers in this part of the valley, whose friendship he held until his death. Few pioneers were so widely known.

Back in Fresno, he opened business here, and finally started a clothing store in the location now occupied by the Bowman Drug Company. He remained there until eighteen years ago, when he gave up the store to become district agent of the New York Life Insurance Company.

One of Levy's first acts upon coming to the United States was to apply for citizenship. He immediately took an interest in local politics and civic affairs, and was usually on the Fourth committees and promoted other patriotic celebrations. He was one of the original freeholders who drafted the present charter of the city of Fresno.

The distinction of being the first man made a Mason in Fresno belonged to him. He was always active in the organization, and was past master of Fresno lodge, No. 247, Free and Accepted Masons, and a member of the Scottish Rite Masons at the time of his death.

Herman Levy is survived by his wife and four suns—Herbert, Leon, Sigmund and Benjamin. He Is also survived by a grandson, Herbert Levy, Jr.

The funeral will be held from the Stephens and Bean chapel at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. Final arrangements are being completed. All Masons and friends are invited to attend. The body will be cremated.
