Civil War Union Brevet Major General. Graduating first in his class from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1818, he was commissioned an officer in the Engineer Corps. From the 1820s to 1861, he was Superintending Engineer of the fortifications in Mississippi, Ohio, Delaware, New York and was Superintendent of the US Military Academy, with the rank of Colonel. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he served in Washington D.C. in charge of the Engineer Bureau of fortifications and was promoted Brigadier General Chief Engineer in command of the Corps of Engineers in 1864. For meritorious services in the Engineer Department, he was brevetted Major General in the US Army on March 13, 1865. After the war, he returned as Superintendent of the Military Academy and after his retirement in 1866, he served on the staff of Governor Morgan of the State of New York.
