The last rites over the remains of Mr. Samuel W. Rainey took place at two o'clock in the First M.E. church conducted by Rev. Earle M. Ellsworth Wednesday afternoon.
Deceased was a member of Ben Butterfield Post, of the Union Veteran Legion, and of the Order of Elks, and all were represented at the funeral. The city officials and police force also attended in a body.
Messrs S Nisley, W.E. Cowden, Dennis Piper and Joe Nichols served as pall bearers, and Elmwood cemetery was the place selected for burial.
Those attending the services from out of the city were Mr. and Mrs. Geo Rainey, Mr. Harry Rainey, Mr. and Mrs. Clem Rainey, all of Cincinnati, Miss Edith Kiernon of Brooklyn, N.y., Mrs. Ida Cummings and family, Mrs. Anna Dunbar and Mrs. Dr. Kells, all of Columbus; Mrs. Mary Thomas, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Robinson, all of Camden; Mrs. Fannie Davis of Steubenville, Mr. Thomas Rainey of Wellsville, Mr. John Nichols of Philo, Miss Lizzie Nichols, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jasper, all of Zanesville.
A number of the Order of Elks paid respect to their dead Tuesday evening by visiting the home and having the customary services.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES
RAINEY, S. W., Mayor of Lancaster. He was born in this city in 1842. He was married in 1866 to Miss Mary A. Koontz, who was born in Winchester, Franklin county, in 1842. They are the parents of five living children, viz.: Ida May, Harry E., William C.; and George H. and Barbara E., twins. Two, John C. and Gertrude, twins, are dead.
Mr. Rainey received a good education in the Lancaster public schools.He enlisted in Company G, Seventeenth Regiment O. V. I., and participated in the following engagements: Hoover's Gap, Stone River, Kingston, Siege at Atlanta, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, and was in Sherman's March to the Sea. Mr. Rainey remained in the service till
1865, when he was honorably discharged, and returned at once to his home.
He was elected a member of the city council in 1877, serving till 1881. In 1879, he filled the office of land appraiser. In 1881, he was elected to the office he now fills.
