James entered the 93rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry on August 9, 1862. He fought in the battle on Missionary Ridge in Tennessee on November 25, 1863 during the Civil War, where he suffered from a gun shot wound to his head. He was mustered out of Company K on June 8, 1865. James married Josepha Mercy Louisa Dunn on December 31, 1868 by the minister David Winters. In the corner of a marriage certificate it reads, 'Reformed Church', Dayton, Ohio. Their 16 year marriage ended in October of 1884. On his death record it states that James died of acute alcohol poisoning.
