After a week's serious illness, Archibald Douglass, died this morning at 3:50 o'clock, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sawin, 1103 Santa Fe Street.
His death takes from Atchison a real gentleman and a most congenial soul.
Mr. Douglass was 77 years of age, and came to Atchison in 1898, to become W. H. Sawin's partner in the undertaking business here. He retired from business in 1903, selling his interest to Mr. Sawin.
A year ago Mr. Douglass suffered a severe illness, and from then until his death was not in normal health. His trouble was general debility and heart trouble. All through his illness his good nature did not forsake him. He cheerfully and with realization approached the inevitable. Amid suffering the characteristic smile did not leave his lips. Inherent courtesy remained with him until the last.
The funeral services here will be conducted in the Swin & Douglass chapel tomorrow afternoon (Thursday) at 3:30 o'clock, with the Rev. M. Owen Kellison officiating. Mr. Kellison is pastor of the First Christian church here.
The body of Mr. Douglass will be taken to Albia, Ia., for burial. The funeral services near Albia will be conducted in the home of Mr. Douglass' son Frederick Douglas, Friday afternoon, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in the family cemetery.
A. Douglass was born October 23, 1853, in Armah County, Ireland. He was only sixteen years of age when he departed from the Emerald Isle and came to the United States. His first work was with the Hartford Saxony Rug Co., in New York City. Two years later he went to Albia, Ia., and became a school teacher in Monroe County. Gradually he became well established in Monroe County. He bought a farm there and became a very successful farmer. Coal mines were developed on his farms, and he personally operated those mines for ten years. During his entire farming and business career he was successful, on account of his indefatigable energy, good sense and integrity. He came to Atchison in 1898, with the Sawins. The last 32 years he made his home with Mr. And Mrs. Sawin.
A. Douglas is survived by one son, Frederick of Albia, Ia. His surviving brother and sister are Gawn Douglass of San Francisco and Miss Margaret Douglass of New York City, William, a son of A. Douglass, died in Atchison about 25 years ago. Another son, Albert, died in Albia years ago at the age of six years.
A. Douglass became a member of the Reformed Presbyterian church when a young man. His parentage was Scotch and Irish. He was a member of Washington lodge, A. F. & A. M. of Atchison.
Atchison will long cherish the memory of A. Douglass for the reason that he was all kindness, and so very affable in conversation and dealing. No harsh note was ever sounded by A. Douglass. He saw good in all folks. He was not prone to criticize. His sense of humor was delightful and every incident reminded him of a funny story. He loved humanity, and animals and birds. His admirtion for a beautiful horse was marked. And in business transactions his word was as good as the proverbial government bond.
The entire community deeply deplores the death of A. Douglass.
