John was the son of Brazilla Ballenger and Luann Cope. Husband of Mary. John died of heart disease at 59 years of age. He had operated a meat market.

Residence North Manchester IN. Enlisted on 2/20/1864 as a Private. On 2/20/1864 he mustered into "D" Co. IN 47th Infantry. He was Mustered Out on 10/23/1865 at Shreveport, LA.

1890 Enrollment of Wabash County, IN Civil War Soldiers shows that he had sore eyes which was contracted during service. He had two children under 16 years of age.
