Abigail Rawdon Ethridge was born in Springfield, Ohio, Oct. 20, 1827. In the spring of the year 1844, when sixteen years of age, she came with her parents to Wisconsin, and in the fall of the same year she was united in marriage with Peter Ethridge, of Fayette. The young people began life on the groom's farm in Fayette, and here they lived, toiled, reared their children, and became good and respected citizens of the community.
Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ethridge of whom nine are living, namely, Mary J., now Mrs. Alonzo Eaton of Aberdeen, S.D., Martha now Mrs. Josiah Matley of Darlington, Margaret, now Mrs. Hezekiah Andrews of Fayette, James H., who died when but three years old, Adelphia, now Mrs. Wallace Lymburen of Mauston, Wis., John S. of Carrollton, Mo., Emery F. of Cooke, Neb., Emma, now Mrs. Amos Alderman of Tunnel City, Wis., Hattie, now Mrs. George Hungerford of Mauston, Wis., and William A of Darlington, Wis.
In 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Ethridge sold the farm and moved to Darlington. Mr. Ethridge died in 1895. Mrs. Ethridge continued to live in Darlington, making her home with her son William the greater part of the time, until her death, which occurred April 19, 1913.
The funeral was held Monday, April 21, Rev. J.R. Fretts of Darlington and Rev. W.L. James of Fayette, both of the Methodist Episcopal church, officiating. Burial was in the cemetery at Fayette.
Six grandchildren acted as pallbearers. They were William Matley, Emery Matley, William Andrews, Robert Andrews, Benjamin Andrews and Jesse Taylor.
Twenty-four grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren are living.
