Francis Wayland Douglas was a graduate of Brown University in 1878. He served as Registrar at Brown for 1879-1884 a position his father William Douglas had held for 1864-1879. He married first Eliza Jane Nichols in 1875 in Madison, Missouri. In 1885 he and Eliza were living in Nebraska where he was a livestock rancher. He came to Indianapolis in 1886. Shortly after his arrival in Indianapolis, he was named secretary of the YMCA of Indiana, and later was selected as the general secretary of the Indianapolis YMCA. For thirty years, he was a local agent for the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company in Indianapolis and was one of the best-known insurance men in the state. Francis and Eliza had seven children: William, Anna, Sarah (Nellie), Francis. Charles, Jane and Samuel. Eliza died in 1889 and Francis married Anna Louise Burgess in 1891. Francis and Anna had two children: Louise Dyer and Theodore W. Douglas.
