Sgt. White Dies at 21 In Vietnam
ALDER CREEK - Notification of the death of Sgt. Gregory Lee White, 21, was received by his parents Friday, Nov. 13.
Sgt. White died unexpectedly at Chu Lai, Vietnam, on Nov. 11, while serving with the 54th Medical Detachment Helicopter Ambulance Unit. This was his second tour of duty in Vietnam.
He was born Jan. 2, 1949 in Boonville, son of Edwin L. and Georgia Yager White. His entire life was spent at Alder Creek and he was a graduate of the Boonville Central School in 1967.
After his graduation he was employed by the Georgia Pacific Paper Company, Lyons
Falls, before enlisting in the Army in 1968.
He took basic training at Ft. Dix., N.J., and had served in Texas and at Ft. Campbell.,KY, before going to Vietnam in June 1969. He served as a medic aboard an ambulance helicopter during both tours of duty.
Awarded Air Medal
Sgt. White was awarded the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster for heroism in making air rescues from combat zones on June 26, 1970; the Brone Star with a device for valor in
rescuing wounded men while under fire at Tam Ky; the National Defense Medal; the Vietnamese Campaign Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Vietnam Service Medal. Sgt. White would have been discharged at the end of January 1971.
He was a member of the Boonville Presbyterian Church, the National Rifle Association,
and a former assistant scoutmaster of Troop 13, Boonville.
Surviving besides his parents are five brothers, Hospital Mate 1.C. Fred R. White with the United States Navy at Lee Hall, Va., James M., Boonville; Dale C., Mark E. and Philip T., all of Alder Creek, and one sister, Miss Rebekah A. White, also of Alder Creek.
Arrangements, in charge of the Trainor Funeral Home, Boonville, are incomplete pending the arrival of the deceased from Vietnam. Rome Daily Sentinel, Tuesday Evening, November 17, 1970
