Vinton Eagle - January 5, 1912 -- Martin Brown, one of the well known retired farmers of Vinton, passed away at the home of his son, Stewart Brown, with whom he had been living for some time, last Wednesday, Jan. 3rd, 1912.
The cause of the dissolution was old age, he having reached his 87th year. He had been a man of very rugged constitution. Up to almost the time of his death he had been down town, and he was down town the day before his death.

He was born in Warren county. New Jersey, July 29, 1826, and died at the home of his son, Stewart, in Vinton, Iowa, Wednesday morning, January 3rd, 1912.
He was married in Warren county. New Jersey, Jan. 6th, 1848, to Nancy Gulick. Nine children were born to them. One died in infancy. The living are Stewart, Asa and John, Mrs. R Wilson and Mrs. F.N. Anderson, of Vinton; Lincoln, of Taylor township, this county, Mrs Caleb Williams, of Hazelton, Pa. and Mrs. William Freese, of Dixon, Ill. He has one sister living, Mrs A. J Gulick, of Garrison.

He moved to Illinois from New Jersey in the spring of 1877 and in the fall of that year he moved to Jackson township, Benton county, and settled on a farm He lived on the for twelve years and then moved to Vinton. His wife, Nancy (Gulick) Brown, died Jan 23, 1905.
Since that time he has made his home with his son, Stewart. As old age came on he became physically weaker and had been in failing health for several years
He was a member of the Methodist church for over fifty years and was a devoted christian. In his more active life and younger years be was a man of strong mentality He was a great reader and was well posted and took great interest in the political and civic affairs of state and nation.

He was a strong believer in the principles of the Republican party and was always interested in its success. He was a man of very genial disposition and drew many strong friends around him.
The funeral services will be held this afternoon at two o’clock at the residence of his son Stewar Brown. Rev. A. T. Bishop, pastor of the Methodist church, officiating.
