The son of Nathan Avant Scott and Mary Frances Coffee, Hereward was married to Helen A. Broemmelsick.

He was a farmer, and they lived in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Helen worked for Dierbergs Market for many years. The couple did not have any children.

Hereward battled lung cancer for the final 6 months of his life. He died at his home at the age of 56 years, 3 months and 9 days.

He was survived by his wife, Helen; 2 sisters, Mae Belle Rohr and Natalie Cobb; 1 foster-brother, Nathan Guy; 1 foster-sister, Jennie Hollenberg; and many extended family members.

In addition to his mother and father, Hereward was preceded in death by 1 sister, Gertrude Wipke; and 1 brother, Pelham Scott.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. on the afternoon of 23 May 1964 at Baumann Brothers Funeral Home in Overland, Missouri.

Hereward's wife, Helen, passed away in 1974 and was buried next to him.
