ORANGE - Gene Cortlandt Whitney, 85, of Enfield, Conn., and formerly of Orange, died on Sunday, Oct. 23, 2005, at the Chestnut Hill Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in East Longmeadow, following an illness.
Born in Orange on Feb. 17, 1920, he was a son of Glenn and Eleanor (Roberts) Whitney and grew up in Orange, graduating from Orange High School in 1939.
He was married to Enise (McKenna) on April 12, 1941, and they enjoyed 64 years of marriage together.
Gene had played on the semi-professional baseball team, the Orange Peals.
While living in Orange, he owned and operated Whitney's Market, which used to be located across from Witty's Funeral Home.
In 1961, he and Enise moved to Enfield, where he went to work for Combustion Engineering and retired from there after many years of service.
An avid sportsman, he enjoyed the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots and had been a member of the Orange Lodge of Masons.
Besides his loving wife, Enise, of Enfield, he is survived by his sons, Gene Whitney Jr. of Springield, MA, Gary Whitney of Windsor, CT, and Kyle Whitney of Vienna, VA; four grandchildren, Alan, Holly, David, and Matthew; and six great grandsons; brothers, Robert Whitney of Orange, Richard Whitney of Keene, NH, and Glenn Whitney of Petaluma, CA; a sister, Marion Bolza of Keene, NH; and several nephews and nieces.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, Oct. 28, in South Cemetery, Orange. The Rev. Natalie Maynard, Interim Pastor of the Orange Central Congregational Church, will officiate.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Enfield Police Benevolent Soceity, c/o Enfield Police Department, 293 Elm St., Enfield, CT 06082 or to the Enfield Ambulance Company, also c/o 293 Elm St., Enfield, CT 06082
