Mildred P. Abernethy

ECTOR - Mrs. Mildred P. Abernethy passed away at Texoma Medical Center on September 12, 1999. Services will be held September 21, 1999, at 11 a.m. at Wise Funeral Home in Bonham. Burial will be in Willow Wild Cemetery.

She was born at Ector on January 2, 1916, daughter of Willie Hummer Porter and Hattie Lee Hundley Porter. Mildred graduated from Sam Houston State University where she received both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Education. She began teaching in Fannin County at Valley Creek in 1935. Later she moved to Anderson County where she taught in Palestine until she retired in 1978.

Mrs. Mildred was married to Mr. R.F. Peterson in July 1942. He preceded her in death in December 1963. She moved to Sherman in 1965, and taught one year at Piner Junior High before marrying R.G. Abernethy, Jr. and moving back to Palestine. There she taught at Story Middle School until she retired in 1978. She was a charter member of the Harvey Womans Club, Meleterian Study Club, Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. She was organist for the Ector Baptist Church of which she was a member.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.G. Abernethy, Jr.; parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Porter; and brothers, Joe and Leon Porter.

She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Ruth Moore of Bonham; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Porter of Ector; Mrs. Frances Porter of Alvin, Texas; and an aunt, Mrs. Gladys Porter of Ector. Nephews and nieces are Pat and Emily Porter of Bonham; Lonny and Bunnye Porter of Arlington; Jerry and Margaret Moore of Boone, N.C.; Talmage and Ruth Ann Moore of Bonham; Carolyn and Ben Lawrence of Denton; Beverly and John Spencer of Alvin; Jan and Bill Scogin of Friendswood, Texas; Mike, Dana and Katy Porter of Lancaster, Texas; Myles and Lisa Porter of Bonham; Kyle and Kimberly Porter of Bonham; Sarah Porter of Lubbock; Chris Moore of Boone, N.C.; Dr. Scott and Kerry Moore of Antigo, Wis.; Elizabeth and Kenneth Kavanaugh of Alpharetta, Ga.; Beverly and Jim McCormick of Dallas; Ben and Sonya Lawrence of Houma, La.; Talmage and Kimberly Moore of Alpharetta, Ga.; Tammi and Kevin Verner of Bonham, Traci and John Petty of Flowermound, Texas; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Anne Joyce; and two greatgrandchildren, Blake and Mary Elizabeth Joyce of Garland.
