Ruth's original Dutch surname was SCHOUWENAAR, which was changed by her great grandfather in 1847 when he immigrated from the town of Kruiningen, Reimerswaal, Zeeland, in the Netherlands.

Ruth Schovner Weaver donated more than 11,000 hours of her time to the St. Joseph and Fawcett Memorial Hospitals Medical Center Auxilliary in Punta Gorda Florida.

She donated more than 2000 hours as a manager of the Cherry Corner Gift Shop at the Medical Center Hospital in Punta Gorda, Florida.

During WWII, Ruth voluteered as a Nurses Aid in Albany, New York.

During the 1950s when her husband was in Korea, she worked in Mary Baines gift shop in northern Virginia (she had a passion for gift shops).

She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. She also supported the Cub and Boy Scouts as a Den Mother and Patrol Mother.
