Derrell Dean

Derrell Dean, 82, died Friday at a local nursing center in Abilene. Funeral services will be Sunday, November 2, 2008, 2:00pm at Hamby United Methodist Church with Doris Miller and Janice Kahl officiating. Burial will follow in Shep cemetery. A visitation is scheduled for Saturday evening from 6pm to 8pm at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Derrell Dean was born at Shep, Texas on April 24, 1926 to Ray O. and Vada Dean. He lost his father when he was 6 years of age. He moved into Abilene with his mother and young sister after his father passed away. After a short time in Abilene, they moved back to Shep.
Derrell was drafted into the service for his country in the latter part of WWII. His unit was on a troop ship crossing the Pacific to invade Japan when the enemy surrendered. They went on to Japan and were part of the occupation force. It was during this time that he joined the 101st Airborne and completed four jumps on the island of Japan. After his discharge he returned home to Shep, Texas to find that the teenage girl he left had grown into a beautiful young woman. He fell head over heels in love with Jane Casey and they were married Sept. 22, 1948.
Derrell and Jane moved to Abilene where he drove a concrete mixing truck helping to build Abilene to accommodate the return of soldiers after WWII. Shortly afterwards he took a job with the Edgar Davis Ranch at Hamby. This started his membership in the Hamby Methodist Church where he was a faithful member, supporter, and worker the rest of his life. Derrell and Jane raised their children Susan, Robert, Cheryl, Tracy and Kevin in this church. Derrell's faith in God was witnessed every day by his children, giving them an example to live by.
He farmed in the Hamby community until his retirement in 2004. Derrell served his community as a school board member for the Hamby School and he was on the board of directors of Taylor County Farm Bureau for twenty years, serving several years as President. He served on the board of Directors of Taylor Electric Coop until he was physically unable to continue.
Derrell loved and trusted in God and put his faith in Jesus Christ early in his life. He was a patriot who loved his country, a 9th generation American farmer who loved the land and a 5th generation Texan whose family was involved in liberating Texas from Mexico.
Derrell leaves behind Jane, his wife of 60 years, and four of the five children he raised. His youngest child, Kevin was killed in a construction accident in 1990. He also leaves behind the members of Hamby UMC, a large group of relatives and many friends from his years involved in his community.
Memorials may be made to the Hamby United Methodist Church in Hamby.
