History of Greely School, Mt. Vernon Township, Waterloo, IA stated that in the winter of 1857 and 1858 the district had 8 houses that were either of logs or rude frame structures, it was first organized in District #9. Luther Ford Nichols was a director of the school.

During the summer of 1873, the district built a school house and contracted with Luther Nichols to build it.Students in the school were: Julia, Martin and William Nichols.

Luther attended school at Springville Academy New York State, 7 miles from East Otto, New York.
Class leader in Methodist church for 30 years.
