Elpedio was born in Calcinia, Italy in 1872. HIs parents were Gabriello Parenti, a miner, and Philomena Pieracci, both from Calcinia.
There were 7 siblings (birth order unknown) Assunta, Carlo, Elpedio, Luigi, Rafaello, Natale, , Evangelina.
Elpedio was an anarchist, a strong anti-fascist,and left Italy when Mussolini was in power. He first went to South America to work in the coffee plantations, but found himself bound into indentured servitude. He escaped, and organized a group of Italian immigrants to oppose the plantations, and free others from servitude, which is how he found, freed, and married Maria.
Elpedio and Maria married in Brazil, and Cari was born in a cave near Sao Paulo in 1899.
The family moved back to Europe, living in France where they had Flora and Fio (two other daughters were born and died), then back to Italy, where Nori was born. During this time Elpedio traveled to the US to work in the coal mines, making trips back to France and Italy. He was frequently involved in improving working conditions and trying to unionize the workers.
in 1912 Elpedio summoned his family from Italy to join him in Bingham Canyon Utah. When the family arrived, they found Elpedio had organized a strike, which failed, Elpedio was blacklisted and they moved to Wyoming working in copper mines. Emma was born in Cumberland Wyoming, a mining town that is now gone.
While in the mines, there was an explosion, where many died, and Elpedio suffered a head injury (about 1913, 1914). The family moved to San Francisco, where Elpedio's brother Luigi lived.
Elpedio and family moved to South San Francisco and tried farming with little success. Trying to recover from his injuries, he would take 10 mile walks to the Pacific Coast, and swim, and then take the 10 mile walk home.
Sometime before the 1921 Kronstadt massacre in Russia, Elpeido heard of the revolution, bought a small boat and tried to sail to Russia. With no sailing experience at all, he capsized and was rescued by fisherman. His boat washed up in Half Moon Bay, 75 miles away.
Not recovering from his injuries, he went to Italy for medical attention. He took mercury for an unnamed condition. Fio had been left in France when Maria and the rest of the family came to the US, so Elpedio brought Fio home with him.
When he returned, he found his family had moved to San Francisco, and he was not welcome. From then on he lived where he was able. He died in 1925, while at his daughter Flora's home in San Francisco.
