Betty Smith Peigler, wife of the late Andy Peigler, formerly of Charleston, SC departed this life November 8, 2009, in Englewood, FL while visiting family.

Born December 27, 1923, in Andrews, SC, she was a daughter of the late Reid Whitford Smith and Emily Bryan Smith.

She attended North Charleston High School and was a resident of Charleston, SC from the age of 16.

Betty retired from the State of South Carolina School System, where she was employed for 20 years as a lunch room manager for several schools in Mt. Pleasant and North Charleston.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Charleston Chapter #56 Order of Eastern Star, was Past Mother Advisor for Mt. Pleasant Assembly #15 Order of Rainbow for Girls.

Betty was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed sewing, various handcrafts, and reading romance novels. She also enjoyed canning and freezing a multitude of vegetables grown by her husband. She will always be remembered by her family for her favorite saying "God don't like ugly."

She is survived by her daughters, Melissa Peigler Marquess and husband, Ted, of Englewood, FL and Knoxville, TN and Amanda Peigler McGinty of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Paul Lester and wife, Gretchen, of Arlington, VA, Suzanne McGinty and Julianne McGinty of Virginia Beach, VA and Morgann McGinty of Boston, MA; step-grandchildren, James McNabb and wife, Alyssa, of Des Moines, IA, Jeffrey McNabb of San Diego, CA, Paul Marquess and wife, Sandy, of Cumming, GA, Cathy Illg and husband, Gary, of Madison, AL and Holly Clancy and husband, Kelly, of Knoxville, TN; brother, Wayne Smith and wife, Janie, of Dayton, NV; daughter-in-law, Leigh Nelson Peigler of Mt. Pleasant, SC; brother-in-law, Herbert Pooser of Charleston Heights, SC and numerous nieces and nephews in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and California.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Andy Peigler, her devoted son, Charlie Peigler, sisters, Elizabeth "Sister" Smith Marlow and Beverly Smith Pooser, both formerly of Charleston Heights, SC and Virginia
"Ginny" Smith Thomas, formerly of Clyo, GA and her brother, George W. "Bubba" Smith formerly of North Charleston, SC.
