Louis Braille
[Add A Photo]
Louis Braille was originally buried in this tomb in the village cemetery of his hometown of Coupvray, France.
However, on the 100th anniversary of his death, it was decided to honor him by reburial in the Pantheon,
the location of France's national heroes, but protests triggered a compromise. His hands were separated and
remain in Coupvray. The rest of his body was interred in the Pantheon. As the coffin was borne through the
streets of Paris, the cortege was followed by hundreds of blind people tapping their canes. The ceremony at
the Sorbonne was attended by dignitaries from all over the world including Helen Keller who gave the keynote
address.
