Beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, Doris Simmons went to be with our Lord May 18, 2009 at age 84. Born December 6, 1924 in Jackson Michigan to Ronald and Helen Bishop. Doris graduated from Washington Gardner High School in 1942, receiving her Bachelors degree from Albion College in 1948. Doris joined the Navy and worked as a lab tech in Fairbanks Alaska where she met her husband to be, Paul Simmons. Paul, transferred by the Air Force, moved to San Diego. In January of 1952 Doris joined Paul in San Diego and worked at Mercy Hospital as a lab tech. Doris and Paul were married in August 1952. Their careers in the Military took them to California, Montana, Arkansas, and Spain, then to Washington State in 1960, Spokane being the last transfer in 1967. The family enjoyed camping and BBQ's, but mostly each others company. Doris lost Paul to cancer May 20, 1999. Doris was very active at Pines Baptist Church for over 40 years, she enjoyed working with the preschool choir, Prime Time, ECLC Committee and Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed her small group family. Doris was called by many of her friends the "wise one" she really knew her bible and she loved Jesus. Doris is survived by her two sisters, Marion Bishop, Martha Geyer, her six children: Judy (Richard) Ernst, Jefferson (Julia) Simmons, Ronald (Linda) Simmons, Rebecca Simmons, Samuel (Anne) Simmons, Timothy (Dorthy) Simmons. Grandchildren: Zack (Petra), Justin (Jen), Dallas (Stephanie), Jeff (Jen), Jennifer, John (Danielle), Joshua, Jason, Kaylin, Heath, Cody, Hunter and 17 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 22, 2009 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 S. Pines Rd., Spokane Valley, WA. A memorial service will be held at Valleypoint at Pines Church, 714 S. Pines at 9:00 A.M., Saturday, May 23, 2009. Interment Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 10:00 A.M. at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Memorial contributions may be made to the Union Gospel Mission. Forever etched in our memories, we see you waving goodbye to us through the kitchen window, we know you wait for us with open arms in Heaven.
