Francis Wait Rathbone was born on January 12, 1856 in Burning Springs, West Virginia, the son of John Castelli Rathbone (1818-1908) and Elizabeth Van der Beek (1819-1890). He was one of eight children Abraham, William, Eleanor, Juliette, Anna, Maria, and John Peter. He attended private schools in West Virginia in his early boyhood and then when ten years of age entered St. Vincent's College in Wheeling, West Virginia where he remained for three years and then entered Rockhill College of Maryland for two years to begin his preparation to enter Jefferson Medical College in 1872. The following year was spent as a student in the New York College of Pharmacy when failing health obliged him to abandon his studies until 1882 when he returned to the Jefferson Medical College and was graduated in 1883. Immediately upon graduation in 1883 "Dr." Rathbone began the practice of medicine in Kansas City, Missouri where he first met the Christian Brothers he committed to his care as a doctor. He was appointed as Attending Physician at St. Joseph's hospital in 1885 at the Home of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd. He was also Professor at Materia Medica and Therapeutics in the University Medical College of Kansas City and the Kansas Dental College. He was a member of the Missouri State Medical Society and the American Medical Association. Francis had married Arianna Jenkins Hannan of Ironton, Ohio on February 27, 1878, and they had three children: Stella Ann, Rose Marie, and Robert Cameron Rathbone. Dr. Francis Wait Rathbone was granted a Diploma of Affiliation by the Superior General, Brother Gabriel Marie, and his Council in Rome on May 5, 1907. Francis Rathbone was recommended for inclusion in the life of the Institute by the Brothers of Kansas City, Missouri. Brother Francis Wait Rathbone AFSC died on December 10, 1916, in Kansas City at age 60 and was buried in Mount Saint Mary's Cemetery in Kansas City. In 1936 his beloved Arianna was laid to rest beside him.
