Wanda Arizmendi-Baker, age 48, of Marshall, died at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo on Sunday night, Oct. 25, 2009.

Wanda was born on January 10, 1961 in Marshall's Oaklawn Hospital to Austreberto "Al" and Ruby (Shepherd) Arizemendi. She grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School in 1979. While in high school Wanda enjoyed being a member of the Redskin Track Team. After graduation she attended Davenport College in Grand Rapids and earned an Associate Degree in Hotel Management and Recreation.

Wanda's life took a different course after the birth of her daughter. Wanda had a passion for helping other people and pursued a career in nursing. She attended Kellogg Community College and earned her Registered Nurse degree.

She has worked at Battle Creek Health Systems for the past 24 years, many of them as an RN in the Critical Care Unit. While still working she attended Western Michigan University and graduated from there with her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2002.

She was married to Jeffrey L. Baker on Feb. 5, 2005 in Marshall at Zion Lutheran Church.

Wanda was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She liked to play bingo and was a constant bingo partner to her mother for many years! Wanda acquired a taste for sports while in high school and enjoyed watching all seasons of sports, especially tennis.

Wanda was an avid fan of her nephew's football games and was normally the loudest booster present! Spoiling her grandchildren was a favorite hobby and time with her family was cherished. She was an excellent cook.

Surviving are her husband Jeff; son Jacob Baker of Marshall; daughter Natalia Embry of Three Rivers; step-son Thomas Jeffrey "TJ" Baker of Battle Creek; grandson Richard Green of Three Rivers and granddaughter Jasmine Baker of Battle Creek; her father Austreberto "Al" Arizmendi of Marshall; brother Arturo (Cindy) Arizmendi of Ceresco; and sisters Sarita (Dale) Parlin of Athens, Laurie (Tony) Gladstone and Therese (Steve) Pattinson all of Marshall; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Ruby in 2005.

As more evidence of Wanda's loving and generous nature coupled with her passion for helping others, she had asked to be a "Gift of Life" donor if possible at her death. Her final wish was granted and she has given a lasting gift of love to improve at least several lives.
