Nannie was only 16 when her father died, and she removed to Raleigh, Wake Co, NC to live with her married sister, Sarah Elizabeth "Bettie" Wayland who married her first cousin, Capt. John Joseph Fray (1840-1884). Her sister, later a wealthy widow, would make national headlines when in 1924, at age 82, she married a 29-year old theater organist, Jack Edward Griffith; but not before her daughter tried to have her declared incompetent.
There she met and married Claudius (Claude) Barclay Barbee in about 1880-81. They would become parents of 3 known children:
* Kate Wayland Barbee HART (1888-1979)
* Claude Barclay Barbee, Jr. (1893-1938)
* Henry "Harry" Barbee (1898-1987)
