Alden Mote was a noted photographer and artist. He operated the Mote Brothers photography studio in Richmond with his brother, Elisha J. Mote for many years. He was also an accomplished artist, painting portraits and landscapes in oil and water color. He studied under his uncle Marcus Mote, Barton Stone Hays, and W. H. Hilliard. His work is in the permanent collection of Richmond Art Museum as well as many other public and private collections. His large oil portrait of Daniel G. Reid hangs in Reid Hospital, Richmond, Indiana and his portrait of artist Edna Stubbs Cathell is in the collection of Earlham College.
