Albert E. Koch, 92, was "promoted to glory," going home to the Lord on April 4, 2006.
He was preceded in death by Marjory, his beloved wife of 67 years. Together they had served the Lord as Salvation Army officers for 42 years, retiring in January 1978 as Brigadiers.
Albert was born on Jan. 13, 1913, in Detroit, to parents Albert and Anna, who were very active members of The Salvation Army in Detroit. After high school, he worked at Cadillac as an executive secretary before entering The Salvation Army School for Officers Training in Chicago in 1934, where he met Cadet Marjory Mirovsky and their love grew. Albert was "commissioned" and ordained in 1935 and was sent to the Saginaw, Mich., I Corps (church) for two years, then on to Cheboygan, Mich.
Albert and Marjory married July 6, 1938, and served together in Petoskey, before being transferred to Ypsilanti. From there they were sent to Detroit Brightmoor then Detroit Grandale Corps, then Ann Arbor, Mich., and on to Milwaukee, Wisc., in 1950. From there they were sent to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., then St. Louis, and on in 1960 to Grand Rapids, Mich., where Albert was Divisional Youth Secretary. They went back to St. Louis in 1963 in the same positions, then on to Des Moines, Iowa in 1965, where Marjory also ran the Salvation Army's Camp Laurie.
In 1967, Albert and Marjory were sent to Milwaukee again, but to the headquarters, not the local church. Albert was promoted to Divisional Secretary with this move and Marjory was the Divisional League of Mercy Secretary and Director of Army Lake Camp. In 1972 they were sent to the Territorial Headquarters of the Salvation Army for the Central U.S., where Albert was Assistant Property Secretary until their retirement in 1978.
Albert and Marjory moved to Sacramento and stayed there enjoying retirement, moving to Oak Harbor the spring of 2001 to be close to their daughter and son-in-law. They enjoyed Christian Fellowship at the Oak Harbor Christian Reformed Church and made many friends at what is now Regency on Whidbey. He received excellent care at Regency's Harbor Care.
Albert is survived by one son, Ron and wife Aija, in Oakland, Calif., one son Jerry and wife Janice in Denver, and one daughter, Sharlene (Shari) Harrison and husband Bob of Oak Harbor; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Marjory on June 26, 2005.
