Her mother died giving birth to Minnie. Her father handed her to the Ropp family (Samuel Ropp and Mary Alice Fahnestock Ropp) at Julia's gravesite.
Minnie was raised as Ropp from infancy, it is not known if she was formally adopted or just given the name of Ropp.

The Ropp family moved west, settling in Idaho. Minnie did not know she was adopted until she had married and had her own child. As soon as she learned of her biological family she brought her son to Missouri by train to meet her siblings. She and her sister, Amanda (Wells) Coleman, had a striking resemblance to each other and became very close, corresponding frequently throughout the rest of their lives. The photo at left is of sisters Amanda (on left), her son, and Minnie (right) holding her baby. It was taken the first time they ever saw each other, note how alike they are in dress, hair style and facial features.
