George Leonard Schwab was born in Bavaria and was naturalized in Nevada County, California in 1861. He served the Union cause in Company G, of the 2nd California Calvary.
After the war, he lived in Virginia City, Storey County, Nevada, and worked as a saloon keeper. Prior to 1880, he was married to Charlotte Hildebrandt.
Charlotte was born in Hanover, Germany in about 1849 and they were the parents of at least the following children - Leona Schwab, born about 1872 in Nevada; Paul Andrew Schwab, born 25 Mar 1877 in California and died 30 Jan 1959; Erwin G. Schwab, born 1 July 1881 in Nevada, and died 1 Aug 1962.
George later also worked as a saloon keeper in California, according to the 1884 San Luis Obispo County Voter Registration.
His widow applied for a pension based on his Civil War service, Certificate 472275.
