James Reubin Thomas, Jr. was the son of James Reubin Thomas, Sr. and Martha Jane Smith Thomas. He served in the Confederate States Army, Co. I, 5, Texas Infantry. He substituted for his father in the Hood's Texas Brigade when his father was needed at home to provide for his family. He was captured at Gettysburg and held prisoner for the remainder of the war. After returning home, he met a school teacher, Bettie Coffee Holmes, and they were married on Feb. 4, 1871. Eleven children were born to this union. He died Oct. 31, 1905, and was buried in the Thomas Cemetery, Clay, Burleson, TX.
