...Daniel N. Wentzel, of Alsace.
Daniel N. Wentzel was born in Oley township, near the Oley furnace, Jan. 6, 1834. On April 7, of the same year, his parents moved to Ruscombmanor township, where he remained until 17 years of age. He went to the township school during the winter, and worked on the farm and in his father's cooper shop during the summer. Later, he went as apprentice to the carpenter trade and worked 11 years at it. When the war broke out he enlisted Jan. 30, 1862, in Company M., 5th U.S.A, Capt. Jas. McKnight. Was honorably discharged on the 14th of November, 1853, at Yorktown, Virginia, by reason of excessive physical prostration, the result of chronic diarrhea. Engaged in several hot contests. After recovering partly from sickness he went to study, and, by the aid of several friends in Reading, progressed so far that in the fall of 1864 was examined by John Ermentrout, county superintendent, a secured a primary certificate. Taught school in Alsace township for nine winters. Was then elected township auditor and served 21 years, and in 1867 was elected a justice of the peace; in 1868 was elected assessor, all in Alsace township. Was re-elected justice in 1872, and was defeated by M.S.L. DeTurk in 1879 by a majority of 4 votes. Was appointed by the governor, on the 18th of May, 1879, to fill the vacancy occasioned by Squire Shalter, being appointed to take the census of Alsace township. In 1881 was again elected assessor and re-elected in 1884, and again elected and commissioned a justice of the peace in 1886, and re-elected assessor over M.S.L. DeTurk with a large majority in 1887. Resided in Alsace township since he was 21 years of age, and always voted the Democratic ticket from top to bottom. As such, was elected 15 times to the Democratic nominating convention of Berks, and was elected judge of election four times. He clerked in the election room at elections 18 years, and studied surveying. Is now practicing for 22 years. Was married in 1856, Jan. 10, raised three daughters and six sons. His wife died June 11, 1881, and is now a widower. Squire Wentzel is attending to his official duties, living with his mother, near Spieces(sic) church, in Alsace township, now 32 years. He is 53 years of age.
