Jan was the first husband of Anna (Nykiel) Bartlaga Podsadecki (1893-1962). They were married on November 17, 1912 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the father of at least five children with Anna including: Theresa, Jadwiga "Harriet," Frank, Jan Walter and Irena Bartlaga. Jan was the son of Tomasz Bartaga and Anna (Kloczkowski) Bartlaga. He was the brother of Walter and Victoria Bartlaga. Jan came to the United States on April 16, 1904 with his father and others from Dobczyce, Poland. Jan died from a stroke during an operation at St. Mary's Hospital.
