She was born in Sioux Falls SD on January 17, 1909 to Frank Harry and Ethel Maude Wilson Gulk. Velda lived an interesting and complete life. She survived Nazi occupied Norway during World War II, during which she gave birth to her son. When the war ended, she brought her children to Sioux Falls, SD. She maintained a love for Norway throughout her life. She was an avid camper. As late as last summer, she was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle. She was a frequent participant at the Sunday Anderson Senior Center. The night before she died, she spent the evening watching the Jazz game and having a party with her grandchildren until late in the night. She was an accomplished painter, genealogist, and adventurer. She was very active in her church.
She is preceded in death by her daughter, Velda (Max) Rothwell, Salt Lake City, UT. Velda is survived by Lois Russell, Salt Lake, Kay (Peter) Prout, Dearborn, MI, Frank (Rebecca) Severson, Charleston, UT; 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren (one expecting); two great great-grandchildren; sister, Dolly Langaas, Cheyenne, WY; and dear friend, Richard (Dianne) Wareham, Waukegan, IL.
The family wishes to thank the staff at the University of Utah Hospital for their professional and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to the Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Graveside services will be held Monday, April 24 at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
