A native of Quebec, Canada, George, as he was known then, was born to Irish immigrants Charles Moore and Margaret Bennett and following the death of his mother he spent his boyhood and youth in the lumbering industry in Wisconsin. He married Mary Jane Chambers in Rice Lake WI and they moved to Cohasset, MN where he built his first mill operation. In 1906 he moved his family and key members of his lumbering partnership via the Great Northern Railway, to North Yamhill OR where he established the Reliance Lumber Co. He served as Mayor of Yamhill during WWI, and the road from downtown to the depot east of town was paved at that time so the lumber wagons didn't get stuck in the mud He is reported as very active in building up the city. The family home was built on one of his land claims where the Yamhill-Carlton High School now stands. Homes for several of his children were built nearby and are still standing in 2016.
He retired from lumbering in 1923 and moved to Estacada, where he operated the Estacada Hotel where workers for the Portland Railway Light and Power Co. were boarders. The hotel became known for its Sunday chicken dinners (25 cents a plate) patronized by Portlanders who rode the streetcar from Portland to Estacada for 10 cents. The Clackamas River across the tracks from the Hotel was a popular swimming spot as well. Following completion of the Power Plant at Three Lynx farther up the River, the Moores moved to the town of Clackamas and the hotel was demolished. His death from multiple myeloma at age 67 left his widow, Mary Jane, six children, William H & J. Franklin Moore, Flora Shuck, Lottie Shepherd, Reliance Carlisle, Lola Rose Gerkey, and 15 grandchildren to fondly remember "WG" as his daughters often called him in tribute to his tenacity!
