Malcolm M. Norwood, Sr., 81, of Cleveland died Tuesday, August 11, 2009, at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Cleveland with Dr. Macklyn Hubbell and Rev. Milton Burd officiating. Burial will follow at New Cleveland Cemetery under the direction of Ray Funeral Home.
Mr. Norwood was born on January 21, 1928, in Drew to Orson Pratt Norwood and Eva Smith Norwood. He served his country in the United States Navy. He married Mary Claire Sugg on August 8, 1954, in Benoit. He joined the then Delta State College Art Department faculty in 1962 as an assistant professor and was named head of the department and associate professor of art in 1965. Mr. Norwood retired with some 28 years of service on June 30, 1990.
Under his leadership the Art Department grew from two instructors and 15 majors to 12 faculty and 175 majors. Norwood made a major impact on art education, not only at Delta State, but across the state. Mr. Norwood received Delta State's Kossman Award, the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member in 1990 and he was the 1991 recipient of the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts.
He was instrumental in the formation of the Crosstie Arts Council in Cleveland and served on the Mississippi Arts Commission. He co-authored "The Art of Marie Hull."
He is preceded in death by his brother, William Norwood, and his parents, Orson and Eva Norwood.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Claire Sugg Norwood of Cleveland; two sons, Mark Norwood of Hattiesburg, Bill Norwood of Yazoo City; a daughter, Stephanie Champion of Madison; a brother, James "Sonny" Norwood of Omaha, Nebraska; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Keith Fulcher, Bill Lester, Robert Pickenpaugh, Sammy Britt, Collier Parker and Stan Topol.
