Mary was born as Maria Billman in Perry twp., Coshocton County, Ohio to Johann Heinrich and Mary (Divan) Billman. She married William Baughman on 21 February 1833 in Coshocton County, Ohio. She had a full and busy life living on the farm and raising 13 children plus a grandchild.

By 1840 Mary and William were living in Fallsbury, Licking County, Ohio and followed the occupation of farming. By this time they had 4 sons and a daughter under the age of 6. Five more children arrived between 1840 and 1850. Tragically, their son William Allen died at one month of age in 1842. Four more children were added to the family by the 1860 census with the last one being born in 1856. Another child, Leonard, died at the age of 2 months. Their post office in 1860 was listed as Newark. In the 1870 census, their post office was listed as Wilkins Run. Mary died in 1880 prior to the census. Their grandson, James A. Baughman, was living with them at the time.

They had 13 children: Henry, John B., George William, Terressa, Samuel Vernon, William Allen, Barbary Ann, Susan Abigail, Eckney, Nancy Elizabeth, Leonard, Andrew Zeppy, and Lyman A.
