Dr. James A. Etheridge died yesterday morning at his residence, 627 Orange Street at 10:30 o'clock. The news was a great surprise to nearly everybody in the city, as he was down town Saturday and was apparently in good health.
Dr. Etheridge has been suffering from sometime from an abcess and his physicians decided that an operation would have to be preformed. Accordingly, yesterday morning Drs. Jackson Weaver and Little went to Dr. Etheridge's residence to perform the surgical operation. A small amount of chloroform was given to Dr. Etheridge and he was soon under the influence.
Dr. Etheridge was stretched on the table and everything was ready for the operatin to begin. Suddenly he raised up his head and made an effort as if to get up. The physicians held him and in an instant Dr. Etheridge dropped back dead. His death was instantanus, and occurred almost before the physicans realized it. Nothing could be done, as life was extinct.
Dr. J. A. Etheridge was born in Eatonton, Ga., where he was reared. He was a son of Dr. J. A. Etheridge a prominent physician of Eatonton. Dr. Etheridge was born on February 3, 1858, and he was at the time of his death 39 years old.
Dr. Etheridge was graduate of Mercer University, finishing his course in college here in 1877. After graduation, Dr. Etheridge studied law and went to Terrell, Tex., where he was employed in a law and land office two years.
After his residence in Texas, Dr. Etheridge returned to Eatonton, Ga., where he was in the drug business for three years. His father was a physician and upon the advice Dr. Etheridge took up the study of medicine. In 1883, Dr. Etheridge graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Baltimore, with second honor and was given Brown's Memorial medal.
He commenced the practice of medicine in Eatonton, Ga., in 1883, and remained there for 3 years. In 1885, he attended the New York Polyclinic and came to Macon in 1886 to practice medicine, since which time he has been conducting a successful practice in the city.
Dr. Etheridge was married in 1880 to Miss Eugenia Munnerlyn of Decatur County and his and three children, one daughter and two sons survive him.
The death of Dr. Etheridge was a peculiar sad one. He had attained the age of his greatest, usefulness, and being an ambitious man, had worked up a practice which to him must have been very gratifying. He was regarded as a splended physician and a most excellent gentleman. He host of friends are greatly saddened at his untimely demise.
Dr. Etheridge was a member of Mabel Lodge F, and A.M. and also a member of Syracuse Chapter, Knights of Pythias. The members of these organizations will attend the funeral today and will conduct the service at the grave.
The funeral will occur at 3 o'clock this afternoon from Dr. Etheridge late residence, 627 Orange Street. The service will be conducted by Dr. J. L. White, Pastor of the First Baptist Church. The interment will be at Riverside Cemetery.
