He was a wagon maker by trade and moved his family to Muscatine County, Iowa in 1855. He died in Aug. following his arrival. The original spelling of the name is Brokhardt and Daniel's ancestors settled in York County, PA about 1752, having gone from Germany to Rotterdam and Cowes hence to the port of Philadelphia. After his death his son John managed the farm for his mother until her death in 1867. Daniel and Elizabeth (Tate) Brookhart are buried in Oak Grove cemetery.
