Dr. Charles P. Harshbarger, 81, last of the "old school" of physicians in Rockingham, who ministered to the needs of thousands and comforted them in their troubles, died at 12:10 yesterday at his home near Port Republic following a heart attack. He had not had good health for some time.
While he was of the "horseback days of physicians' – the only mode of travel on the country roads and in the nearby mountainous sections – he was most progressive in medicine and in civic and religious affairs. He was a conscientious leader of all worthy causes in East Rockingham and was acclaimed by many as one of its outstanding residents.
He practiced his profession for 56 years. Not only did he ride horsebacks, later in a buggy, and still later in an automobile to visit his patients, he found time to contribute to the welfare of all. He was a member of the Rockingham County School Board and a firm believer in the best of education for the youth of the county. A member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren since youth, he took an active part in all of its activities and his efforts and interests extended far beyond his local church in religious and civic enterprises.
He was a director of the Rockingham National Bank for over 20 years and his keen judgment was respected by his fellow directors. He was a trustee of his alma mater, Bridgewater College for over 20 years and there again his influence was felt in the advancement of the educational program of the institution. He was a director of the Rockingham Mutual Telephone Company until that organization was dissolved last year. He was a director of the Cross Keys Mutual Fire Insurance Company and a member of the Rockingham, Virginia and American Medical Societies. He also was active in the Port Republic Ruritan Club.
Dr. Harshbarger was graduated from Bridgewater College in the class of 1890 and was the first graduate of that institution to enter the medical profession. He was graduated from the Kentucky School of Medicine in 1892.
He was born near Goods Mill, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Showalter and spent his entire life in the surrounding community. In 1896, he was united in marriage with Miss Betty Long, of Goods Mill, who preceded him in death in 1943.
He is survived by two sons – Dr. J. C. Harshbarger, well-known Harrisonburg physician, and Dr. I. L. Harshbarger, of Bridgeport, Conn; a daughter, Mrs. J. L. Kenzie, Lake Wales, Fla.; a foster son, Cecil Arey, of Port Republic; and six grandchildren. Her also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Martha Diehl, Bridgewater, and Mrs. Mary Pence, Mt. Crawford.
Funeral services will be held from the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 and will lie in state until the hour of the funeral. Funeral services will be conducted by his pastor, the Rev. Foster Bittinger, assisted by the Rev. Homer J. Miller, a former pastor, and Dr. Paul H. Bowman, president emeritus of Bridgewater College.
Pallbearers will be: Paul Lineweaver, Charles Miller, Thomas Bowman, George Argenbright, Charles Hinkle and Willie Lam.
