Joan C. Burns, 72, of Red Bank, entered into eternal life on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at her home. Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Avon, Joan moved to Red Bank in 1960. Five years later, she moved to Middletown, where remained until 1984. She was a graduate of Fontbonne Hall Academy and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Joseph's College for Women. She began her teaching career in the Brooklyn Public School System. Joan married Joseph Patrick Burns and moved to New Jersey in 1960 and raised three boys, Michael, Joseph and Andrew. She taught in St. James Elementary School as a substitute. After her children were of school age, she taught as a substitute teacher in the Middletown Public Schools and at St. Leo the Great. She was also a Title 1 teacher in East Keansburg until 1976 when she began the kindergarten at St. Leo's, her true love. She remained there until 2004.
She was predeceased by her father, Battalion Chief FDNY, Edwin F. Schneider; her mother, Rita Schneider; her brother, Edwin M. Schneider; and her son, Michael G. Burns. Surviving are her children, Joseph P. Burns and his wife Kerry of Salisbury, Md., their two children, Molly Higgins Burns and Joseph Patrick Burns III, Andrew Burns and his wife Gabriele of Denver, Colo.; and many close and dear cousins.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 at Thompson Funeral Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7 at St. Leo the Great, 50 Hurley's Lane, Lincroft. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Middletown, where Joan will be buried with her son, Michael.
