Obituary--Sarah Baber
Sarah Ellen Perkins was born in Sumner, Bremmer County, IA, July 5, 1862. She married Ellis R Baber on December 31, 1882. She passed away August 1, 1928 at Asheville, N.C., where she had been spending the vacation period in the mountains, with her son, Ray. She is survived by all six o f her children, five sons, C.P. Baber of Emporia, KS; E.M Baber of Denver, Colo; R.E. Baber of Nashville, TN; H.E. Baber of Akron, Colo and two daughters, Mrs. S.C. Sarensen of Netewaka, KS; and Mrs. Lee Fletcher of Fairport, NY.; two brothers L.H. Perkins of Ottawa, KS and Charles L. Perkins of Wellsville, KS; and one sister , Mrs. J.W Wilcoxon of Emporia, KS.
Mrs. Baber has been well known through the associations with her husband with the administration of church activities throughout this part of the state. Rev. E.R. Baber, as many in this region will recall, served as a pastor in the United Brethren church for 33 years, and a district superintendent of the Northwest Kansas Conference for ten years. Mrs. Baber entered heartily and effectively into the problems in these various fields of labor and was always a capable helpmate. However, the genius of her life was to be found in the home. Here is to be seen her crowning achievement. Like a true artist the subtle and delicate suggestion she created the atmosphere that made the home attractive and at the same time the Christian way of life the natural, normal thing. This contribution is to be seen in the lives and vocations of her children, two of who, Ernest M and Harold E are in the ministry, two professors in colleges, one Ada Clare, carrying forward the ideals of motherhood in the home, and one, Faith E. who chose her life companion a Christian minister. She was a true mother in the finest sense of the word.
Funeral Services were held in the Unite Brethren church at Concordia, KS at 2 p.m., August 4, 1928. The sermon was preached by and old friend of the family, the Rev. Maurice Nichols, D.D., of Denver, Conference superintendent of Colorado, Utah and Wyoming. Interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery by the side of her husband, Rev. E.R. Baber, who preceded her to the eternal rest by nearly 6 years.
