He had been an employe of the Illinois Central Railroad for eight years. He was promoted to the job of special agent only a month ago. His imposing physical size and courage were factors taken into account in the promotion. He was six feet tall and a proficient amateur boxer.
He was born in Kentucky in 1895 the son of Mr. and Mrs. John McClure. The family moved to Harristown when he was a small boy. He was educated in the Harristown school.
He was described by Art Wilson, Decatur special agent of the I. C. and by other associates, as one of the most popular men in the railway system. He was devoted to duty and was in the habit of volunteering for dangerous assignments.
He was married 14 years ago to Miss Helen Siloski in St. Louis. He and his wife lived in Clinton for a time and then came to Decatur. His father was killed a year ago by a Wabash train in an accident south of Decatur.
Besides his widow who was prostrated by his death he leaves 3 children. They are June, 13, Jack, 10,and James,2. All of the children were ill of Influenza in the family home Tuesday night. He also leaves his mother in Harristown and a sister, Mrs. Anna Garrett of near Peoria.
