He was deployed with the UK contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Rfn Backhouse was killed by an improvised explosive device while on foot patrol in Sangin, Helmand province. He was one of five soldiers from C Company killed by a secondary blast after an initial IED had injured several soldiers and an Afghan interpreter.

Aged 18, from Castleford, Yorkshire. He joined the military in September 2007 and was on his first operational tour.
He was a passionate supporter of the local rugby team, Castleford Tigers, and Manchester United football club.

Rfn Backhouse leaves behind his parents Andrew and Sharon and his three brothers, Gareth, Dean and Ryan.

Funeral, with full military honours, held on July 27, 2009 at Holy Cross Church, Airedale, Castleford. A private burial at Castleford Cemetery followed the service, with the cortege pausing at his beloved Castleford Tigers' ground on the way.
