Virginia Ruth Atkins, 76, of Pembroke, died Saturday evening, April 26, 1997 at her home following a long illness. Born in Pembroke on April 5, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Helsie & Eleanor Link Hilton. She was a hairdresser for Williams-Jamison-Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, and belonged to the Lucas Memorial Christian Church in Maybrook Community. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Keith Collins. Surviving are her husband of 57 years, L.K. (Bud) Atkins, Sr.; a son & daughter in-law, Sammy & Jo Ann Atkins, Pembroke; daughter & son-in-law, Sue & Gerald Meredith, Pembroke; daughter & son-in-law, Penny & Michael Huffman, Nashville, TN; five grandchildren, Shelley, Slater, Marty, Jon, and Logan; a great-granddaughter, Jordan; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Kellam-Sykes, Norfolk, Evelyn Ficarra, Virginia Beach; a very special friend and relative, Rachel Ballard, Pearisburg; a special friend and neighbor, Nancy Lafon, Pembroke. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, April 30, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Kendall Funeral Home Chapel in Pembroke, with the Rev. Eddie Kendall and the Rev. James Belcher officiating. Burial will be in Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to New River Valley Hospice, 111 W. Main Street, Christiansburg,Va. The family will receive friends at the Kendall Funeral Home, 605 Snidow Street in Pembroke from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening.
