LIFE SKETCH OF JOHN A. WHITE
John Albert White was born near Seymour, Indiana, January 3, 1855. He departed this life at his late home Tuesday morning, Oct. 24, 1916. He had attained the age of 61 years, 9 months and 21 days.
It was in Indiana, where he spent his early life and received his school education. His father, Benjamin White, died when he was a boy of 10 years of age, he was thus left to the care of his widowed mother for training and direction in the affairs of life. His mother passed away when he was a young man.
He came to Iowa 37 years ago where he engaged in farming and stock raising. He purchased his farm in English township, Lucas county, Iowa, in 1881, where he has since resided. Soon after securing this place for a home he was married to Miss Sophia Catherine Brown, near Chariton, Iowa, on March 8, 1881.
They were the parents of seven children, all survive except one son, Ralph, who died in infancy. The living are, Roy A., of Bayles, Calif.; Mrs. Grace Patterson, of English township; Guy C. of Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Elva Riggs, of Newbern, Iowa; Thomas and Mrs. Hazel Baker, of English township. These children all being born on the farm and have here grown to manhood and womanhood in the community.
He was a man who was sturdy, honest, generous, industrious and intelligent, with a keen sense of right and wrong. One who stood for the best things of life in the community. For many years he has served English township as one of its trustees and for four years he held the office of one of the members of the Board of Supervisors of the county. In this position he became well and favorably known throughout the county.
In his religious life he was a member of the Friends Church, the faith of his father. In early life he professed faith in Jesus Christ as his Saviour. His life was plain and unassuming, but very genuine.
The funeral service was largely attended, held at the Cain church in English, Saturday, Oct. 28, 1916. Rev. W. N. Graves, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church at Vermillion, S. D., and nephew of the deceased, had charge of the service. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The music was furnished by a mixed quartet from Chariton.
Pall bearers were Frank Brown, Charles Brown, James Brown, Thos. Brown, Richard Brown and Oscar Slater. Interment in the Spring Hill cemetery.
