The crew left from the base at Kweilin, China on a sea sweep mission. The Pilot, then Second Lieutenant Glenn A McConnell, was the only known Pilot in WWII to shoot down a four-engine bomber from a four-engine bomber. The plane was hit by enemy attack, caught fire, and ditched in the Pearl River, near Hong Kong, China 18 April 1944. Pilot McConnell and Radio Operator Sgt Spadafora were the only two to ultimately survive, and were both captured as POWs and held for the next eighteen months. It is believed that the CoPilot Auslander and Armorer/Gunner Holley survived the ditch, but were killed while attempting to swim to shore.
