Samuel died at the Field Hospital, Rome, Georgia, during his service in the Civil War for the Union Army.

"Wing, Samuel. Enlisted in Battery B, Dec. 31, 1863, at Grand Rapids, for 3 years, age 45. Mustered Jan. 9, 1864. Died of disease at Rome, GA, July 29, 1864. Buried in National Cemetery at Marietta, GA."
