Karen grew up on a small farm with her 4 brothers and 3 sisters. She was the daughter of Leo Sicking and Martha Elizabeth Knabe Sicking. She graduated from Muenster High School in 1970 and attended North Texas State University in Denton for 2 years, then Southwestern Medical School in Dallas receiving her Bachelor of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from the School of Allied Health Sciences at Southwestern Medical School in May of 1975. She then received a Masters Degree in Education from Texas Women's University. She married and had 2 sons.
