Michael mustered into the military as a Private in Company H, 81st Pennsylvania Volunteers on 18 Sep 1861 in Easton, PA. He was wounded Malvern Hill (aka Battle of Poindexter's Farm) on the first day of battle. He was taken prisoner and on 27 Jul 1862, he was placed on the boat 'Daniel Webster' and taken to Fortress Monroe. Apparently he died on the boat and was buried at Fortress Monroe as per a hand written letter by his commander.
