Martha May Holmes, age 85, of Gainesville, Mo., passed away, Sunday, April 6, 2008, in St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Mo. She was born Martha May Tripp, September 20, 1922, in Jefferson City, Mo., the daughter of Clyde Edgar and Matilda Fredericka (Knernschield) Tripp.

On March 10, 1943, she and Earl Denton Holmes were married in Jefferson City, Mo. In 1947, they moved to Earl's hometown of Gainesville, Mo., where they would spend the next 50 years in business. Together they owned and operated Holmes Grocery and Station, Gainesville Motor Parts, Sears Catalog Store, and Holmes Hallmark Cards. They were dedicated to serving the public. They worked side by side and enjoyed helping their customers by keeping the station opened for business 14-16 hours, seven days a week for many years.

She lived a very full life, besides being a business woman. With only a limited education, she was self taught on a variety of subjects. With every project she would undertake, she spent numerous hours of research in order to complete her project "just right". She loved oil painting, and was a talented seamstress. She could make anything, often times without a pattern. She was a member of Mammoth Assembly of God and Gainseville OES. Throughout our lives, she taught each of us so many wonderful things. We all will miss her greatly, forever.

She is survived by two daughters; Earlene Ledbetter and Julia Crawford and husband Leslie, all of Springfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Shane Ledbetter and wife Kristina, Susan Ledbetter-Ewing and husband Richard, Aaron Crawford and wife Kimberly, and Adam Crawford; five great-grandchildren, Nicole, Sally and Molly Ledbetter, Hadley and Maggie Ewing; one sister, Ann Gawer; half-sister, Kay Fennewall; half-brother, Gary Tripp, all of Jefferson City, Mo.; one brother-in-law, Palmer Holmes and wife Delphia of Gainesville, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Thursday, April 10, 2008, in Gainesville, Mo. in the chapel at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home with Bro Dale Roberts and Bro. Gale Wooten officiating. Interment was in Mammoth Cemetery.
