Devoted son of Norman E. Hawkins, Sr.; loving brother of Gerald, Sylvia, Norman, Jr., Delcia, Paulette and Kenneth. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Andrew Mitchell; a host of nieces; nephews; other relatives and numerous friends.
The celebrations of Dennis'' life will begin with a viewing on Monday, June 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a service of tribute at 7 p.m. at Bethesda Baptist Church, 1808 Capitol Avenue, NE and a viewing on Tuesday, June 30 from 9 a.m. until time of funeral at 11 a.m. Interment Fort Lincoln Cemetery. Services by BIANCHI.

Dennis Hawkins was on his way from work at Whittier Elementary School in Northwest to Bethesda Baptist Church to teach vacation Bible school at the time of the crash. Hawkins was a devout Christian and D.C. native, and he was the oldest of eight siblings. He was a "God-fearing man. Nicole Clifton, principal at Whittier Elementary, said Hawkins's title was a non-instructional aide, but that did not nearly come close to describing the range of duties he performed in his three years there Compiling school data, helping with registration, answering phones, helping teachers order supplies, you name it, he did it, she said.
