James O. Childs, 78, of Ceresco died on Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital in Kalamazoo.
Mr. Childs was born on October 25, 1930, in Tekonsha to James O. and Vera Fay (Tobey) Childs. He graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1950. On August 22, 1970, he married DeMaris "Debbie" Ostrander at Lakeview Baptist Church in Battle Creek. She survives.
Mr. Childs owned his own contracting business for 20 years, and he retired in 1979. After his retirement, he worked with the Mobile Missionary Assistance Program help build and repair churches. He helped build the former Calvary Baptist Church, and the Grace Baptist Church in Marshall. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, were he was an active member and continued his love for building making numerous book cases and shelves for the church. Mr. Childs enjoyed working in his yard, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife DeMaris "Debbie" of Ceresco, five children, Connie (Jack) Hayden of South Bend, Indiana, Kenneth (Kathleen) Childs of Battle Creek, David (Linda) Childs of Mount Hope, West Virginia, Shannon (Augie) Guerria of Orangeville, California, Samuel (Crystal) Childs of Marshall, 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother LeLand Childs of Bellevue, and a sister Francis Goodrich of California. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Arthur and Leonard Childs.
Visitation will take place at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-8pm with family present to greet friends from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Funeral services celebrating his life will take place at 10am on Wednesday at the Grace Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
